State reaffirms commitment to hosting AFCON 2027, CHAN 2025 as it pushes forward with stadium projects

Kenya has taken a major step towards hosting the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN), with the State Department for Sports confirming that a Sh1.6 billion hosting fee has already been paid to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports has reaffirmed its commitment not only to CHAN 2025 but also to the broader goal of hosting the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027. As part of its nationwide sports development agenda, the ministry has announced plans to construct 37 sports academies across the country.

“So far, 27 contracts have been signed, and contractors will be deployed to their respective sites starting April 2025,” Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya posted on X.
Emphasizing the government’s role in supporting but not interfering with sports federations, the ministry underlined the importance of transparency and accountability in the management of sports programmes.
“We will not interfere in the federations’ activities. However, we have agreed with them that they must run their programs with openness and a great deal of integrity to better our sports activities in the country,” he said.
On infrastructure, the ministry confirmed that efforts to improve and unlock challenges surrounding the country’s stadiums are well underway, with a fast-tracked approach to meet CAF standards.
“I can confirm that our sports infrastructure construction is on course. We have unlocked the stalemates surrounding our stadiums and are still doing so with haste. I personally have a weekly schedule to visit our stadia,” Mvurya added.
